Welcome to MILANO

Information about MILANO Milan is said to have been founded by Celtic tribes, and since then it has been rebuilt three times by foreign invaders. The last of these occasions was at the end of the Second World War when over a quarter of the city was flattened by the Allies. From 1200 onwards, Milan became an increasingly important city, and finally changed from being a municipality to a “Seigneury”. The city walls were extended, new buildings were built and roads were paved. The Visconti family, came to power in 1300 and brought about a lengthy period of splendor and wealth for the city. The Sforza family took over from the Viscontis, and with them they brought peace after many years of warring against Venice and Florence. In 1859, the Austrians were driven out of Milan and the city was annexed to the Kingdom of Piedmont, which then became the Kingdom of Italy in 1861. Milan was immediately chosen as the economic and cultural capital of Italy, and has maintained this title up to modern days. Today Milan is the second largest city in Italy after Rome. There is an interesting blend of modern innovation and well-established cultural tradition within the city. Milan is the financial and business centre of the country as well as the main communications and transport hub. At the end of the 19th century, the city's economic success was built on the metal factories and rubber industries, which replaced agriculture and the silk trade as the main source of income. Today Milan is famous for its fashion houses, which have encouraged thriving media and advertising businesses in the city. There is also a significant manufacturing industry, centred on automobile production, and strong financial markets.
